Yesterday, I talked about Yellow Pages and why you should have your business on there. Yellow Pages is now just another Online Business Directory.
When it comes to online directories (or Citations) you’ll find hundreds of sites that you can register your business for. I do recommend having your business on as many directories as you can, this is just another avenue to get exposed online and a way to create a backlink to your website.
Here is a small list of the more popular Online Business Directories:
- Better Business Bureau
- Angie’s List
- Merchant Circle
- Yellow Pages – yes, people still use Yellow Pages!
I’ll just leave it at 10 directories, you can always “Google it” to find hundreds of online directories.
On top of these general directories, I recommend that you can find specialty directories specific for your industries. An example of a specialty directory are:
www.rehabs.com – rehabilitation clinics
www.theknot.com – wedding planners, photographers, videographers
If you do some research, you can find your niche directory.
You can either add yourself to all the directories, but make sure your information is exactly the same on all the different directories. Or you can have a company do it for you if you don’t have the time to do it. Here is my recommendation:
Find a company that will add you to as many directories as you want for a one time fee. Many companies offer a monthly subscription plan. They say they will add your business to all the directories and even add it to the new ones that start and keep your information up to date. But in my opinion, this isn’t worth it. The only time you would need to update the information on your business is if you have a change of address or your contact information changes. Which does not happen often.
So the bottom line is
Don’t pay for any of the month citation services that promise to get your business on all the directories.
Either do it yourself or hire a company that will add you to a bunch of directories for a one time fee.
Oh! And make sure that you add yourself ASAP into the top 5 platforms listed above. Those are the biggest platforms in the US.
