How Do I Protect My Website From Getting Hacked, Attacked, Etc.

One of the many questions we receive from business owners is, “how do I keep my website secure?”

First thing to do is to get an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate for your website. This prevents unwanted things coming into your website and it is also good for SEO because Google likes it.

Second, is to get a good hosting provider such as Siteground which is what we currently use on most clients. Some are on Hostgator. Make sure they gave good customer service that can help you if there is an issue with the hosting that affects the website. A lot of websites tend to get hacked because site owners do not always have the time to regularly check it so it is important to have a hosting provider that can be reached through chat or phone for when the need arises. Godaddy is one of those that have many ways to reach them but sometimes they charge for certain things and can be a little bit pricey. Siteground has pretty good customer service and can be reached 24/7.

Third is to always back up your website for at least once a month. If anything happens, you can always re-upload the most recent copy of your website from your back up. If you constantly blog or make updates to your site, we recommend that you do a weekly back up. A lot of hosting companies offer this service. Some offer this for free and some would charge extra for certain back ups. You can also get your website developer do it for you as well. There are tools on website platforms that can do back ups such as some plugins on WordPress.

Fourth thing is, make sure your website is up to date. On WordPress, the platform we use for most of our clients, we would check at least once or twice a month to make sure everything is updated. Plugins get old and when you don’t get to update it, it can put your site at risk. Hosting companies also update their servers as well. Make sure that when they notify you about it, you check your site for any issues and report it to them if there’s any.

Lastly, set up a spam prevention such as captcha on website forms or comments section where people can spam your website or send bots and use a strong password that cannot be easily guessed.

These are the easy steps you can take that can prevent your site from getting hacked or broken into.  And if you need any help with your website, feel free to contact us.
