How Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Helped Me Grow My Business

How Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Helped Me Grow My Business

Today I’m going to talk about how my hobby Brazilian Jiu Jitsu help me in my business.

So my hobby is Brazilian Jiu Jujitsu. It’s basically grappling or wrestling but with submissions. Submissions being arm bars, choking people out, something to like subdue someone that is trying to attack you or do you harm. And now I’ve been doing it for 15 years, so it’s not a black belt yet, but I’m almost there. I’ve been doing it for a while. I’ve learned a lot in the process and it has helped me not only as a person grow, but help my business grow as well. I believe a couple years ago I wrote an article of how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu help me with my online business.

This one is just basically similar to that, but talking about some of the ways it has helped me was basically building more confidence in myself and confidence when I go out in the street, confidence I could protect my family and being aware of your situations at all times. Let’s go into how it helped me in my business.

The first thing is, I’m part of a group that we all have the same thing in common. And at Grace University, there are thousands of people that go through the academy at any time. Our classes are pretty big. Sometimes there’s 50, sometimes there’s a hundred people in the class. I have an opportunity to meet all these different people from all walks of life. Some of them own their own business, some are doctors, lawyers, engineers and some are salespeople. I meet all these different people from different fields. And from there I’m building new connections. When you’re sitting, they’re talking in between roles or in between training or even training with someone, you start to learn more about people. This has helped me connect with people from different walks of life. It has helped me grow Digiwei because I’ve met a few business owners that have basically mentored me to what they did to run a successful business. Some of the things that they’ve mentioned are like joining a networking group, joining the chamber, or even telling me some of their mistakes that they made and helped me with some of the issues that I’ve had. Basically, meeting a group of different people in different backgrounds and connecting. It’s all just basically connecting. So that’s one of the first things that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has helped me do is connect and find mentors within there to help me grow my business.

The second thing is, in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when you first start, you’re gonna lose right away. You can lose all the time actually. You’re gonna lose probably for the first two to three years. You’re not gonna be able to submit anyone. You’re going to be dominated by the smaller person or even the hundred pound girl or the a hundred pound teenager in the class. You’re going to get beat up. And this really helps you with your humility and your ego. Similar to business, if you have an ego or you think you’re the sh*t or whatever, it’s going to affect you. In Jiu Jitsu, in the beginning, losing all the time was hard, but it helped me understand what it takes, what I need to do to get better and just sticking through it to grow as a person. Same thing with being an entrepreneur, you need to be able to learn from your losses and grow from there. So every loss isn’t a big deal. It’s something to grow and learn from. And that’s what Jiu Jitsu was telling me is no matter how many times I got beat up or I lose, I know I’m getting better because one day if I’m going against a black belt and he submits me like 20 times, maybe the next roll, I roll against a lower belt or someone the same belt as me and I dominate them. It’s really about learning from my losses in Jiu Jitsu has helped me grow my business and prepare for any losses that I have down the line.

The third thing that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has helped me and how it has helped my business is efficiency. In Jiu Jitsu, it’s really all about being efficient and using leverage in different situations. So if you’re not efficient, if you use all your strengths in the first minute, then you don’t have nothing left in the next four minutes if it’s a five minute round. So you have to be efficient with your energy and the movements that you do in a fight. Similar to running a business, if you’re not efficient, it might take a long time for you to do something and it might not get you to your goal quick enough. One example I have is when I first started my business, I was never good at accounting. I hated accounting and I never want to do it. But when I have my business, I try to basically balance my books, do the accounting and it would take me so long to do it, that it wasn’t efficient for my business. I spent so much time doing that. It’s basically as a waste of time. I would spend all day doing it and it get nowhere. So what I did was go and hire a bookkeeper and a bookkeeper does everything for me. They do all my accounting stuff and everything was ready for when my taxes come. I can just go get my bookkeeping into my accountant and everything’s done and ready for, without me doing anything. It saves me a lot of time and headache from worrying about something I shouldn’t be worrying about. So just being more efficient in the processes of my business, that’s one way that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has helped me basically grow my business to what is today.

So, those are basically how my hobby or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has helped me grow my business today and finding what you can do is in your hobby, how does it help you grow your business, are you looking at all the different things that’s helping you in your life and maybe see how your hobby is helping grow your business or helping you personally. It’s gppd to have a hobby because it takes you away from the everyday routine of doing the same thing over and over again. And hobby is good to basically take your mind off things and just focus on that.
